Each persona moves through the journey, revealing friction points, misinterpretations, inappropriate product selections, or dropout risks.
Using synthetic personas to overhaul a mortgage application process allows a building society to identify whether simulated users flag critical issues. Effective nudging must balance usefulness with ethics. The boundary between helpful guidance and manipulative influence can be thin, especially in financial contexts where trust is central. Ethical frameworks emphasise transparency (consumers must understand they are being nudged), reversibility (the nudge must be easy to dismiss), and welfare-enhancing outcomes (nudges must aim to improve financial wellbeing, not push products).
Measuring success also requires nuance. A nudge that reduces overdraft fees in the short term may lead to worse long-term outcomes if it encourages increased short-term borrowing. Institutions need to track both behavioural outcomes and financial wellbeing over time, ensuring that interventions help—not just shift the problem elsewhere.
Consumers’ preferences vary, too. Younger customers often welcome proactive guidance; older customers may prefer subtle prompts over prescriptive advice. Effective systems must adapt to these differences, learning from responses and tailoring nudges to individual styles.
3. Dynamic Choice Architecture
Choice architecture—the way options are presented—has long shaped financial decisions. With AI, this becomes dynamic. Instead of showing all users the same interface, institutions can adapt decision environments to each person’s knowledge, behaviour, and context.
Traditional financial interfaces assume one presentation suits all. In reality, the same mortgage comparison tool may help an expert but confuse someone with low financial literacy. Dynamic choice architecture resolves this by tailoring information levels.
A mortgage platform, for example, may show sophisticated users detailed amortisation tables, rate structures, and cost projections. For others, it may highlight simple payment comparisons, visual timelines, and illustrative scenarios. The objective is not to hide information, but to present it in ways that align with users’ abilities and preferences.
As with synthetic personas and nudging, fairness is critical. Personalised interfaces must not result in unequal access to essential information or steer users toward products that benefit the institution more than the consumer. Transparency and ongoing monitoring are essential to ensure that adaptations genuinely help users make better decisions.
From a regulatory perspective, dynamic choice architecture will increasingly fall under frameworks concerned with transparency and explainability. Institutions will need to articulate how and why interfaces adapt, and demonstrate that personalisation improves outcomes rather than restricting choice.

A strong predictive system is paired with behavioural understanding. Rather than triggering generic alerts, systems should respond to underlying behavioural drivers—stress, short-term bias, optimism bias, or avoidance. When institutions understand why risky behaviours occur, they can intervene in ways that support long-term wellbeing.
